A Botox treatment can counter the deep lines we get on our faces over time due to muscle movement. In fact, every time we make a facial expression, 50 pairs of facial muscles cause the skin of our face to bend and contract, making our skin fold at the weakest spots. As we age, our skin gradually loses its elasticity due to collagen loss resulting in the development of permanent grooves in those spots – permanent grooves we commonly call smile lines. Over the years as we habitually contract our forehead muscle to frown, squint, or concentrate, our expression causes us to form frown lines, the two grooves or lines between our eyebrows. Raising our eyebrows, on the other hand, affects our forehead in another way. Additionally, when we contract our forehead muscles to raise our eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines form.
Botox comes from the Botulinum toxin, the nerve-blocking protein produced by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium. It is the most popular and most widely used form of Botulinum in the United States. Medical professionals use Botox for aesthetics and medical purposes. In 2002, the US FDA approved Botox cosmetics for eliminating forehead wrinkles.
A Botox injection blocks the nerve endings from releasing special nerve chemicals that cause the muscles to contract. By doing so, the affected muscles that create wrinkles weaken causing the skin over them to smooth out. However, the injected nerve endings start repairing themselves and completely recover after over a period of three months, which in turn results in the return of full muscle function over the injection area. Because of this nerve ending recovery, forehead wrinkle retreatment is necessary after about three months.
Forehead frown lines are one of the easiest facial wrinkles to treat. Doctors only need to inject a very small amount of Botox to relax the overactive muscles in the forehead area, and over time reduce the wrinkles. By injecting Botox, the brows should look calm and relaxed. Nevertheless, Botox does not produce instant wrinkle elimination after injection. It usually takes about a week to work.
You do not need to spend much for frown line Botox treatments. Based on average costs for treatments, it will only cost about as much as a cup of premium coffee per day over the three months. For the first year of Botox treatment, you will need to receive injections every three to four months. After that, you only need to visit your doctor every four to six months for retreatment.
Not all patients experience the expected outcome mentioned above. Patients are unique; and the amount of Botox ultimately depends on how active and bulky their muscle is. Therefore, the dosing for a Botox treatment should be based on the patient’s response to treatment to achieve the desired effect. Botox should never completely obliterate the forehead’s muscle function. It should allow the patient to express his or her emotion while having a smooth skin at rest. To achieve this look, it is important to receive Botox treatment injections only from well-trained, licensed practitioners.
