A chemical peel is a safe and effective aesthetic procedure that can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of your skin. Chemical peels use a special chemical solution to remove wrinkles, smooth the texture of your skin, and exfoliate the outer layers of your damaged skin. Most medical professionals and aestheticians use chemical peels to get rid of wrinkles and improve the skin on your face; however, some may also use it to improve the skin of your neck and hands.
People who have the following skin problems can benefit most from having chemical peels:
• Age and liver spots
• Sun-damaged skin
• Rough or scaly skin with patches
• Irregular skin pigmentation
• Wrinkles and fine lines
• Acne or acne scars
There are three basic types of chemical peels:
Also called the lunchtime peel, superficial peel uses the gentlest chemicals. This treatment penetrates the outer layer of the skin for a gentle exfoliation. Superficial peels are used to correct mild discoloration and roughness for a fresher looking skin on the face, neck, hands, and chest.
Glycolic acid is typically used for a medium peel. This type of chemical peel penetrates the outer and middle layer of the skin. This treatment rids of damaged skin cells, such as: age spots, freckles, moderate skin discoloration, rough skin, wrinkles, and even precancerous skin growth.
Phenol and tricholoraceticacid are the chemicals often used for this procedure. This peel is a more penetrating, reaching the skin’s middle layer and remove damaged skin cells. This procedure is typically used to get rid of shallow scars, age spots, moderate skin lines, and freckles. Patients who undergo this kind of chemical peel usually experience dramatic skin improvement after the procedure. (NOTE: Deep peels are not used on darker skin types as they can cause bleaching)
