Are you having a hard time finding the right anti-wrinkle solution? Are you wondering how to minimize your wrinkles, or get rid of your acne scars and other skin problems? If so, you should probably consider microneedling as a solution.

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy or percutaneous collagen induction, is a relatively new and minimally invasive aesthetic treatment solution to treat scars, get rid of wrinkles, stretch marks, and acne scarring. Some people even use it to induce facial rejuvenation.

Many patients favor this scar, blemish, and wrinkle treatment option because it is simple, safe, and relatively cheap. On the other hand, dermatologists and plastic surgeons like doing this procedure because of its effectiveness in delivering therapeutic agents into the inner layer of the skin without damaging the topmost skin layer, the epidermis.

A look into Microneedling’s history

Dr. Michael Pistor, a French doctor, was the earliest proponent of mesotherapy, the non-surgical aesthetic procedure that used multiple injections of plant extracts, vitamins, and medications into the subcutaneous fat to improve skin texture and appearance, in 1952. Dr. Andre Camirand, a Montreal plastic surgeon used tattoo guns without ink to treat post surgical scars in the 1990s. In 1996, Dr. Des Fernandes, a South African plastic surgeon, introduced skin needling to treat wrinkles at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery congress in Taipei.

How does your doctor perform Microneedling?

Microneedling is a simple procedure that can be performed in your doctor’s office. Your doctor will first anesthetize the skin area with topical anesthesia for about 45 minutes to an hour. After this, he or she will use a roller and roll it on your problematic skin area 15 to 20 times in horizontal, vertical, and oblique directions. Pinpoint bleeding (tiny droplets) may occur during the procedure, but your trained doctor can easily control this problem. After the procedure, he or she will put wet saline pads on the treated skin area.

What can you expect after having your Microneedling treatment?

You need to wait six weeks to have another micro needling procedure because it takes this long for the new collagen to form. You may not see obvious results after your first treatment. It is common to receive three to four treatments to see optimal improvement for things like moderate acne scars.

What are the side effects of Microneedling?

Most patients can tolerate micro needling. However, some patients may develop skin redness for two to three days after the treatment. Your doctor may advise you to protect your treated skin from the sun and use local antibiotic creams regularly as a precaution to prevent infection. Because it is a minor procedure, you can go back to work the very next day. Aside from skin redness, micro needling has no other side effects.
