What is microneedling?

Automated Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is a new innovation in aesthetics medicine for fine line and wrinkle treatments. Besides treating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, collagen induction therapy is also used to remove acne scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, and improve the skin’s overall appearance. During the treatments, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to naturally produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in improvement of the appearance of softer wrinkles. Automated microneedling also creates superficial micro-channels which can be used with topical creams and serums to help improve the appearance of the epidermal layer of the skin.

How does microneedling make the skin look younger and smoother?

Automated microneedling punctures the skin to create controlled micro-injuries – approximately 250 tiny holes per square centimeter. These micro-injuries trigger the body to release growth factors and fill these tiny wounds with newly produced elastin and collagen. Elastic protein allows the tissues to resume their shape after stretching. Collagen, the most abundant protein within the body, serves as connective tissues. By producing these components, the skin can improve its texture and firmness and remove wrinkles while also reducing the prominence of scars, stretch marks, and pore size.

How does your doctor perform microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure performed in your doctor’s office. Your skin will be anesthetized with a numbing cream for about 45 minutes prior to the treatment. The doctor will then use the automated microneedling device to directly treat the skin. This is done by moving the device across the skin multiple times in different directions. There may be some minor pinpoint bleeding (tiny droplets) that the doctor can easily control. After the procedure, wet saline pads are applied to the treated area.

What can you expect after having your microneedling treatment?

You need to wait six weeks to have another microneedling procedure because it takes this long for the new collagen to form. Depending upon what skin condition is being treated you may or may not see obvious results after your first treatment. It is common to receive three to four treatments to see optimal improvement for things like moderate acne scars. However, fine lines may sometimes be removed in the first treatment.

What are the possible side effects of microneedling?

Most patients can easily tolerate the microneedling procedure. However, some patients may develop skin redness for a few days post treatment. You may be advised to avoid direct sun and to use a topical cream for a time after each micro needling treatment. Temporary skin redness is the only side effect. Since microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure you can go back to work and other activities the very next day.
